Immigration

Reflection:  "Since its founding, the United States has received immigrants from around the world who have found opportunity and safe haven in a new land.  The labor, values, and beliefs of immigrants from throughout the world have transformed the United States from a loose group of colonies into one of the leading democracies in the world today."                                                                    --U.S. Catholic Bishops, "Strangers No Longer: together on the Journey of Hope" 2003, #17

"The Church in America must be a vigilant advocate, defending against any unjust restriction the natural right of individual persons to move freely within their own nation and from one nation to another.  Attention must be called to the rights of migrants and their families and to respect for their human dignity, even in cases of non-legal immigration."  -John Paul II, "Ecclesia in America," 1999, #65

Write/call:   Your Senators   www.senate.gov

Message:       Please support President Obama’s commitment to Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Timeframe:    September

On July 1, President Obama spoke about preserving "America's legacy as a nation of immigrants."

Sample Letter:

Dear Senator______________

I urge you to support President Obama's commitment to Comprehensive Immigration Reform by making every effort to complete and pass legislation that will reform our broken immigration system.

The American people have shown their disappointment in the failure of Congress to pass immigration reform.  Presidents George W. Bush and Obama have both shown determination to address the problems created by the broken system, but Congress has not acted.  As a result, families are separated, employers and employees struggle, racial tensions escalate and states and cities respond with laws and ordinances that are often punitive and over-reaching.

The United States desperately needs legislation that will reunite families, provide an earned path to citizenship, protect workers, restore due process protections and provide humane and respectful treatment of undocumented persons.

On July 1, President Obama spoke about preserving "America's legacy as a nation of immigrants."  Please make every effort to pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform this Congressional session.

Sincerely,

The  U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' five principles for Comprehensive Immigration Reform:

  • To make family a priority in immigration law

  • To insist the worker programs contain protection for U.S. and migrant workers

  • To allow for an earned legalization program for the undocumented in the country

  • To restore due process protection

  • To respond to the economic, political, and social root causes of migration
